I've been following the Tonight Show since Johnny was hosting with Ed as his sidekick.
As many other youths, I've also rooted for Dave to take over the show when Johnny decided that he would retire.
As Jay was rewarded the seat and Dave moved over to CBS to start his own show, rivalring the legendary late night show, and kicked Jay's ass for quite some time in the begining.
But then I think Dave kinda lost his mojo, his passion, his drive. I don't see him care as much about the show anymore. No wonder his show has been on the loosing end the past decade. Not that I worship Jay for his kissing-up the guests and save-their-behinds-when-they-needed-help approach, but picking/preying on your own guests while they were vulnerable, laughing at others is not my idea of entertainment, at least not on a network TV show.
To sum it up, I have so long ago ditched Dave and his Latenight Show after all the disappointments I could take. I've started to watch Jay and the Tonight Show (Jay's style). Even though it was not exactly the Tonight Show that the old timers were used to, you do get what you expect. Consistency.
Because I can afford to stay up late, I sometimes try to catch a few episodes of Connan after the Tonight Show. But he hasn't really got onto me. Maybe I am just too old, or too FOB, to connect with his material and presentation. Maybe I just didn't care to try to get it.
Bottom line is, Connan is not up to it yet, to take over the Tonight Show.
Jay is not God. Don't expect him to beat all the CSI shows with his monologues and Jay Walkings, yet.
NBC gave it a try. Didn't work out.
So they had to do what they had to do, making business decisions.
That's why Jay will still be hosting the Tonight Show.
I know that's a breach of contract. But maybe that's the only practical otion they had.
Who knows. Maybe all this hoopla is just a facade, masquerading the dilema NBC TV is really facing.
Complained all he wants, but I would be if I were Connan to walk away with the "bonus" NBC executives are offering him to hand over the show to Jay. Like he can handle it, anyway.
And for Dave, grow up, man! You're pathetic. How does it feel like to have your arch-rival walk away from the contest because you're no longer relevant?
Instead of poking fun on Jay and NBC's gang, you should take this opportunity to take a good look at your self, at your staff, and at your show... to see if you guys can stage a comeback.
You'd been given a second chance to start another rivalry. Make it counts!
